Christian Karcher was raised among the rows of ripening grapes on his family’s vineyard just outside the small, picturesque town of Colmar in the Alsace region of France. Descending from a long line of wine-growers dating back to 1590, the Winery, Domaine Robert Karcher, has been in the Karcher family since its establishment in 1956.

Christian spent his early years learning the vintners trade along side his father and his brothers. During the autumn harvest, his mother prepared traditional French food for her large family, their friends and all of the vineyard’s workmen. These festive meals were served on long, rough-hewn farm tables between the lush grape rows, out in the fields. It was at these tables that Christian’s love of entertaining and passion for good food was ignited.

Christian pursued a formal culinary education at the Academie de Strasbourg. Following his undergraduate studies, he apprenticed at Au Soleil, the hotel-restaurant in Andolsheim in Alsace. He worked under the fastidious eye of the late and critically acclaimed Chef Henri Bost. Following his apprenticeship, Christian’s first professional assignment as Chef de Partie was for the world- renowned Paul Bocuse in Collonges-au-Mont-d’ Or-Lyon. “Bocuse’s philosophy was incredible!” says Christian, “Mr. Paul’s innovative nouvelle cusine and pursuit of perfection in taste and presentation made a huge impact on me in my formative years of training.” Paul Bocuse is widely known for his insistence upon the use of the highest quality components. He sources local ingredients and creates innovative seasonal menus based upon their availability. His incredibly delicate, artfully presented food has won many prestigious culinary awards, as well as a rather large cult-following amongst the world’s well-traveled foodies.

Following his work with Bocuse, Christian was elevated to Executive Chef and presided over such venerable establishments as Cafe des Artistes (now Pisces) in Key West, Mirabelle in Beaver Creek and Cafe Juanita in Seattle. Christian also led the culinary program for the prestigious Wilderness Cruise Lines (now Lindblad Expeditions). After more than 20 years working under the world’s best chefs and managing some of the world’s most noted kitchens, Chef Christian Karcher chose to settle here in New Orleans.

In an effort to return to that which he truly loves - artfully preparing great food for happy patrons and their guests - Christian gave up the hustle and bustle of the commercial kitchen to establish his own brand, Christian Karcher Catering.
